Projection Screen Buying Guide
Where to start when buying a projection screen: type, size, fabric and mounting, in the order that actually matters.
Start With the Room, Not the Screen
Before comparing screen types, work out three things about the room: how the projector will be mounted or placed, how much control you have over ambient light, and roughly how far the back row of seating is from the wall. These three answers narrow the field far more than browsing a catalog first.
Choose a Mounting Type
If the screen needs to disappear when not in use, a motorized or tab tension screen retracts into a ceiling-mounted housing. If the screen can stay permanently mounted, a fixed wall screen gives the flattest, most rigid surface. For temporary setups — events, training rooms, outdoor use — a tripod or mobile floor-standing screen sets up and packs away without any wall or ceiling work.
Get the Size Right
Screen size is measured diagonally, and the right size depends on viewing distance more than room size. Use the screen calculator to convert a diagonal into actual width and height for your aspect ratio, and to check a comfortable viewing distance range before you commit to a size. Our size guide also breaks down common diagonals individually.
Pick a Fabric
Fabric affects brightness, contrast and — for home theatre setups — whether a speaker can sit behind the screen. See our fabric guide for how gain, ALR and acoustically transparent fabrics differ, or browse the actual SKUs in the fabric catalog.
Don't Forget the Accessories
A ceiling-recessed motorized screen usually needs a ceiling mount kit for the projector itself, and sometimes a projector lift to hide the projector until it's needed. Plan these alongside the screen, not as an afterthought.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the single most important decision when buying a projection screen?
Mounting type. It determines which screen categories are even relevant to your space, before size or fabric come into play.
Can SPS Acmera help me decide between screen types?
Yes — use the size calculator to narrow your dimensions, then request a quote with your room details and we'll recommend a suitable category.
