What Is an ALR Projection Screen?
ALR screens keep image contrast intact in rooms that aren't fully dark. Here's how.
The Problem ALR Solves
A standard projection screen reflects light evenly in every direction, including light from room lamps, windows and wall reflections — which washes out contrast and makes blacks look grey. An ALR (ambient light rejecting) screen uses a fabric structure engineered to reflect light arriving from the projector's angle strongly, while rejecting light arriving from other angles.
Where It Helps Most
ALR screens are most valuable in rooms that can't be fully darkened — living rooms with windows, offices, and multi-purpose spaces — where a standard screen would otherwise look washed out during daytime or with lights on.
ALR vs UST ALR
Standard ALR fabric is built for a projector mounted at a typical throw distance and angle. A short-throw projector sitting close to the screen needs a different reflective structure — that's what our UST ALR screen is built for; see our UST ALR guide for the distinction.
What to Check Before Buying
ALR performance depends on your specific projector's brightness and throw angle, and on how much ambient light the room actually has. Share your room and projector details on the quote form and we'll confirm whether ALR is the right fit.
